Mark Twain
"The Ganga (Ganges) front is the supreme showplace of Benares. Its tall bluffs are solidly caked from water to summit, along a stretch of three miles, with a splendid jumble of massive and picturesque masonry, a bewildering and beautiful confusion of stone platforms, temples, stair flights, rich and stately palaces....soaring stairways, sculptured temples, majestic palaces, softening away into the distances; and there is movement, motion, human life everywhere, and brilliantly costumed - streaming in rainbows up and down the lofty stairways, and massed in metaphorical gardens on the mile of great platforms at the river's edge."
As many of our readers may not be able to keep up with our daily reporting of our grass root activities, GHHF decided to update all the articles once every ten days. Hence, we are summarizing our activities between May 11-20.
1)    “Shiva Shakthi Maha Yagnam”, first of a kind, is being organized by JSS Hindu Temple in MD from May 9-14, 2023. (5/10/23)
The purpose of the Yagnam is to consecrate the land on which the divine temple of “Sri Chamundeshwari Devi” will be constructed on the JSS Ashram premises in Maryland. The Maha Yagna Homas are held to transform sadhakas and alleviate their challenges in all dimensions of life. JSS Spiritual Mission is a long-cherished vision of His Holiness Sri Sivaratri Rajendra Mahaswamy, the 23rd Pontiff of Sri Suttur Math, which is now being carried forward by the present 24th Pontiff His Holiness Jagadguru Sri Sivaratri Desikendra Mahaswamy.

2)     Bala Samskar Kendras in Assam- students learned about Sri Rabindranath Tagore and his achievements. (5/13/23)
Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941) was the youngest son of Debendranath Tagore, a leader of the Brahmo Samaj, which was a new religious sect in nineteenth-century Bengal and which attempted a revival of the ultimate monistic basis of Hinduism as laid down in the Upanishads. He was educated at home; and although at seventeen he was sent to England for formal schooling, he did not finish his studies there. In his mature years, in addition to his many-sided literary activities, he managed the family estates, a project which brought him into close touch with common humanity and increased his interest in social reforms. He also started an experimental school at Shantiniketan where he tried his Upanishadic ideals of education. From time to time he participated in the Indian nationalist movement, though in his own non-sentimental and visionary way; and Gandhi, the political father of modern India, was his devoted friend.

5)    Bala Samskar Kendra Students – Learned about the importance of Mother and the names of 20 Mothers who blessed us with great Spiritual Leaders (5/16/23)
On May 14, our teachers taught about the importance of Mother, the respect Hindus accord to mother and her contribution to the richness of Hindu culture. Mother has been extolled as a god form in several places in the puranas and also God has been approached as a son approaches his mother by many great savants. She is Dhatri (One who bears the child), Janani (one who gives birth to the child), Amba (One who nourishes the limbs of the child) and Veerasu (One who makes him a hero), Shusroo (One who takes care of him). But Sankara in these poems is not dealing either of God in the form of mother nor mother in the form of God. He laments to the lady who was his mother and points out how his conscience is pricking him for being not able to do the duty of a son.

6)    Bala Samskar Kendras – Students learned about Alluri Seetharama Raju, his heroic life and his battles with British. (5/17/23)
Sri Alluri Seetharama Raju: Born on July 4, 1897, into a middle-class family, Alluri, as a boy, was deeply disturbed when he heard about the untold miseries that the countrymen were suffering under British rule. Known for the brief but emphatic Rampa Rebellion in the Eastern Ghats of Andhra Pradesh against the British, Alluri, who is also referred to as Manyam Veerudu (Jungle Warrior), rallied thousands of poor Adviasis and kindled the spirit of freedom among them. When a friend gave him badges with King George’s image on it, the teenager wore it on his shirt and famously said that wearing it was to flaunt one’s servitude. “But I pinned it on my shirt near my heart to remind all of you that a foreign ruler is crushing our lives,” he said.
